I have an STEC-30 and it continued to work fine after the 10.2 upgrade. I’ll see what my settings are when I get the plane back from annual next week. I do t think the 10.2 upgrade has anything to do with it. Your new unit may need new settings, or perhaps something else is having a problem.

Unfortunately my number 2 out isn't even turned on.  Both one and two are wired to the 55x.  Now,  I'm not totally sure about a stec-30 is you may have a gpss converter on that one.  The 55x is designed to take arinc 429 gpss without the need for a converter.  Also ran fine for years off a G530.

Call Christine Evans at Avidyne tech support. Speak to her personally. If she doesn't have an answer directly, she will help get the issue resolved. I have experienced two issues with loss of features - and they were fixed with a software load that Christine had created for my situation. The load took a second or two, then the reboot, then the features (WiFi/BT and 500' callout) were back.

I'm just about to connect a dual G5 (plus GMU-11 and GAD-29B) setup to an IFD540, but would someone mind checking the connections/settings for me? Other hardware in the system is a Bendix-King KT74 transponder, STEC 50 autopilot, and Garmin GI-106A nav indicator. What I've gathered from reading the installation manuals is:

IFD540 settings for the G5s:
RS-232 channel 1 output: MapMX format, connects to both G5s to provide GPS data (I’ll also have a backup GA35 antenna just for the G5s)
RS-232 channel 1 input: disabled
GPS ARINC 429 output: low speed, GAMA 429 format (connects to GAD-29B)
VOR/ILS ARINC 429 output: low speed (connects to GAD-29B)
GPS ARINC 429 input 1: low speed, GAD 42 format (connects to GAD-29B)
SDI: LNAV 1
VNAV: Enable Labels

IFD540 settings for the KT-74:
RS-232 channel 2 output: ADS-B (Avi) format (connects to KT-74 directly)

IFD540 settings for the GI-106A:
Direct connection from dedicated IFD540 ports, no need to configure any I/O

Is that right?

Two futher questions:

(1) Do I need to connect the IFD540 VOR/ILS ARINC429 input to the GAD-29B too? The IFD540 manual shows connections for the Aspen systems, and their airdata output only goes to the GPS ARINC 429 input section. However, the G5 install manual shows the ARINC 429 connection going to both GPS and VOR/ILS sections on a GNS-530W.

(2) Is there any way to have the G5 output its altitude data to the KT-74? I’ve got an altitude encoder, but if I can dump that and rely on the G5’s internal encoder then that saves weight and wiring, as well as ensuring that the G5 and the KT-74 agree.

Thanks for any help!

Myron,
I just sent you an email.  For posterity's sake, I will answer here so if anyone else has this issue it will give them some idea of where to check.

For GPSS roll steering to an STEC 55x, the IFD 429 output needs to be configured for one of the GAMA 429 varieties.  Straight ARINC429 will not work.

Since 10.2.1.0 is now out, perhaps time to take the items on this list that didn't make it and start a new one.

Before doing that, perhaps one of the new Avidyne team members can comment on the status of my pet peeve, being RF leg support. See previous posts above for the discussion.

In a first instance, it would be nice to have an explanation from Steve of why this is a big deal. The IFD540 AFM indicates that RNAV 1 is supported, and I seem to recall that the issues getting New Zealand RNAV 1 approaches into the navdata were resolved.

There are a number of approaches and departures in Europe that require RF but are NOT AR. A couple examples are Zurich LSZH VEBIT1K RWY 34 RNAV 1 SID and Strasbourg LFST RNAV(GNSS) RWY 05 neither of which are in the IFD540 navdata. I have more.

And as mentioned, apparently the GTN's do support this.

Took a quick look through the manual and maybe missed it but...how to I ID a VOR/ILS aurally? I’m familiar with the automatic textual decode of the Morse code. In other words, how do I enable audible ID and adjust volume? Thanks.

I'm not familiar with your setup, but my nav1 & nav2 are fed to my audio panel, which has standalone nav audio bus buttons.  If you have that and can't hear the Nav when pressing the nav audio button, then you probably need to set the VLOC volume under AUX.  Go to AUX, AUDIO, Volume Control.  Use the bottom right knobs to adjust the volume as necessary

The IFD has a filter that automatically filters out the Morse ID of a VOR station. This is useful when you're listening to the weather over a VOR frequency.

To hear the VOR ID, you have to turn off the filter.

Do this:

1) Select the NAV input on your audio panel so you can hear the output of the IFD navigation radio.

2) Press the COM/VLOC Tuning knob to select the navigation radio frequency box. (Magenta box appears around it.)

3) Press the VOL/SQ/ID knob. This turns off the radio’s ID filter, so you can hear the identification Morse code. The letters ID will be displayed in blue.

4) Turn the VOL/SQ/ID knob to adjust the volume of the navigation radio audio signal.

Hope this helps.

Mike

I will be as polite as possible and simply say that I am very unhappy.  This change in the behavior of the avionics was/is a real surprise.  I do not recall ever before losing an expected safety feature in an "upgrade".

Also, I have yet to see a real reply from Avidyne stating that the CAS logic and messaging remains the same.  Will I still get "traffic 12 o'clock high" for example?

Honestly, this is stopping me from doing the software update right now.

The CAS logic and messaging appears to be the same...just no “Traffic” aural. I still get the full caution (yellow) CAS message including relative o’clock position, distance, and high/low. I’m running sw 10.2.1.0 with a SkyTrax100 (RS232 for both traffic and weather).

If “Traffic” will not be specifically announced, I think it would be great to have a user specific optional caution distinct aural tone to bring any IFD generated caution CAS message to the pilot’s immediate attention.

The Skytrax 100 was built by Navworx before they went out of business, which is the reason Avidyne can't update the software on the MLB/Skytrax 100.

CAS without the aural alert defeats the purpose of having traffic alert. If you are looking outside (which is what you are supposed to be doing in VMC even under IFR flight plan to "see and avoid"), you are not going to see the CAS alert and miss a traffic warning.

That is a big failure on the part of Avidyne. The Garmin GTX 345 has aural alerts including position and altitude.  I wish it was fully compatible (or future compatible) with the IFD 440 and EX5000 MFD, otherwise I would dump the AXP340 and Skytrax100 and install the GTX 345 (one less antenna and dual link ADS-B in)

The AXP340 is manufactured by TRIG avionics.

RF legs are a pet peeve of mine too.  Support for RF legs was designed into the system from the very beginning of its development - all the way back to R9 days.  We had them way before brand G.  The software still supports them and if we were allowed to include them in the database, they would work just fine.  From a software perspective, they are exactly like a DME arc.  So the problem is regulatory, not technical.  We just have some significant flight tests to do and I think we'll end up having to add a datablock in order to meet the newest regs.  It's in the plan for the next release, but it's behind the leg combination fixes that are the pet peeve of brou0040.  If everything else for 10.3 is ready before we've had time to complete RF leg work, though, support for RF legs will slip to the release after that.

I started a "Suggestions for 10.3" thread, so have at it...  http://forums.avidyne.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=1481&PID=18203&#18203

* Audible callouts for "approaching FAF" and "approaching MAP" when flying an active approach. (I'm not asking for vertical callouts for altitudes, as I understand that's a complex and liability-prone issue)
* Audible callouts for "approaching waypoint"-- any time the airplane is about to change course or a new altitude restriction is in the FMS, give me a noise, much like TOD works now
* audible tone any time a CAS caution/warning message appears (thanks to dmtidler for the suggestion)
* hit Foreflight with a stick until they support streaming from the IFD

Hi Steve,

I'd like to revisit a few items I put in the database from the precertification testing

1) Direct-to from the MAP pages returns the page to split page requiring the user to unsplit the page and change back to the MAP page.  Really not necessary

2) On approaches where a procedure turn (hold) is included, I'd like a prompt for yes / no to fly the procedure turn rather than having to delete it from the flight plan.

3) Timer based on fuel used and fuel remaining.

4) * New * I think the Boeing banana needs to be more the one pixel wide, it gets lost on the screen

5) Traffic popup on the traffic so we can know more about it.  Active when pressed with a finger, like an airport popup.

6) Finish the traffic integration

7) A test screen for attached boxes like TAS, TWX670, etc. to show their status and test.

I think I have several others in the database, but cannot remember them now.  Great product as is!!!
