The callout requires wiring from the IFD to your audio panel in addition to what you might have had for your GNS530 before. It doesn't use the same audio out for COM and NAV audio....

I understand both of the things you point out. FYI, I did not have a GNS 530 before the IFD 540; the callout did work from the day it was released. The setting for it is still ON in the USER-1 settings. And, I do get TOD tones, so the audio circuit is still viable. The callout is simply no longer occurring at all the airports to which I had received the callout, typically as I rolled out of the turn from downwind to base. I used it as a confirmation that I was in proper position to continue the approach to landing, whether on base or on final during an instrument approach.

Tech support has confirmed that the Wifi/BT config pages have disappeared and that they will create a .dsf file specifically for my unit to re-enable those pages/features that DID exist prior to 10.2.1 update yesterday.

My question relates to the entire installation manual for the IFD, not the instructions for the software update. There are things that change in the instruction manual, such as the WiFi setup, that we users need to have in hand so we can be informed before we try to make user-configurable features such as WiFi and Bluetooth work. And, it is nice to have the manual handy when one makes a query of an installer who might not have the latest version available, such as when integrating G5 electronic instruments that depend on many settings that are only contained in the installation manual. If the G5 installer is not an Avidyne dealer, he has no access to the installation manual that is currently posted only on the dealer site. Incidentally, the early versions of this manual were on the documents site of Avidyne and were not restricted access.

Are you sure that a new IM has been released for 10.2.1 and moved to restricted access? I suspect that there is just the service bulletin for the upgrade, but not (yet) an updated IM.

My recollection is that the IM was publicly available in the downloads section because I always downloaded it when a new one came out, but it definitely has disappeared.

I don't know why the SB's aren't also publicly available. They can't be used without the new software, and that can be restricted to Avidyne approved avionics shops.

Both the IM and SB contain important information for owner/operators when planning panel changes (e.g. adding or changing external interfaced equipment) and trouble-shooting issues before paying an avionics shop to do work.

Another data point. Have a single IFD 540. Been buying the $480 dollar Nav Data only subscription from Jepp. So far have been able to update both IFD 100 and trainer with this subscription. Coming up for renewal so hope nothing changes.

The r13 version of the IM that pertains to 10.2.1 does exist.  I've seen it.  I don't understand why it's not publicly available, at least to registered owners if not everyone.  It would be very helpful in planning panel upgrades, and even in deciding to buy an IFD or not, to have access to the IM so that a buyer can know (for those that want to know) what the shop knows and be able to speak intelligently with them.  I like to be an informed buyer and owner.

Avidyne, why the change?

Steve,  I have no WiFi signal coming out of the 540.  At least none that are recognized by either
my Android or Ipad tablets.   Would I also need the .dst file?   10.2.1
The WiFi/Bluetooth screen allowance screen does come up at startup.

OK, I'm afraid this one is on me.  I did verify that the raw navigation data does contain VFR waypoints.  When I run the software in the office, I'm using the latest tools to process that data.  However, I totally forgot that the processing VFR waypoints to drive the map had not been included in the previous version of tools provided to Jeppesen.  We're in the final stages of getting those tools to Jeppesen, but it will probably be a month before we actually get it to them.  Then, it will be a cycle or two before the updated data sets are available from them.  Bottom line is that 10.2.1 does indeed support VFR waypoints as I illustrated, but you don't have the data to drive the software yet.

In the meantime, I've updated the VFR waypoints files available on the website for cycle 1803 (http://www.avidyne.com/support/doctype.asp?doctype=vfr+waypoints&list=doc).  The zip file that you'll download contains the spreadsheet and also a KML file that will drive Google Earth.

I apologize for the time that you spent trying to figure out why you couldn't see the waypoints on your map.  Once they're available from Jepp, they will magically appear on the map, no further updates required.

You'll only need the dsf if you don't see the networking page in Maintenance Mode.  If that's the case, call tech support and they'll arrange to get it to you.

However, if you do see it and you're trying to use the IFD as the server, be sure to have it in "Local Wi-Fi" mode (again, this is from Maintenance mode).

Then, make sure the Setup page (flight mode) has networking turned on and that the WiFi icon does not have a circle with a slash overlaying it.

I will add to the voices that would like the updated IM.  These details are important for us that tend to not work with a shop so much as have a A&P/IA look over our shoulder.

Has anyone tested the IFD as a position source for the FreeFlight UAT's?  I ask because I recently acquired one that, while it does include built in gps receiver, I would like to not add another antenna.

I understand it is not approved at this time, but if the IFD will function, I would do that until the 2020 deadline in hopes it may become approved.  If it doesn't become approved we'll simply add the needed antenna at that time.  Display will be on the Aspen and I'm unconcerned if there is no display on the IFD.

A GNS series can be used and the IFD is compatible, right?  But in reality- ?????

Thanks for getting to bottom of this and communicating it, Steve, and for posting the latest list in the meantime. Much appreciated.

You can be sure there'll be a group of us in Europe keeping a lookout after each new cycle. From your message, sounds like that'll be somewhere around 1805-1806.

The WiFi/BT feature and the 500' callout both returned with the application of the file from tech support. Thanks.

I met up with an A&P friend of mine today, and we went through the 10.2.1 installation procedure on my 440/540 units.  Everything went well, and I'd say it only took 30-40min per unit, coming from 10.2.0.  The only sticking point for us was that the Service Bulletin requires the installer to do a post-install check based on the IFD Installation Guide version 10 or later.  My googling around only turned up version 9.

I put a call into to Avidyne tech support and TJ was awesome enough to help us get our hands on the latest copy of the document.  So far it looks like everything is functional as before, and I'm looking forward to doing some flying with the new version later this week.

Big thanks to the team!

Yes, there are three or four values that have CHANGED from the prior version. If using the old version, they will apparently not match in the conformity test. But, they actually do.

So why the secret IM. I received the update 10.2.1 and it went fine.
I'm am A&P and have done all the releases. I see the IM as an
integral part of the install. I wasn't given access to the new IM. I
suppose it just worked out.

Is anyone running a 540 with a Stec-55x?  My gpss roll stearing went away, I think abou the time of my 10.2 upgrade.  I've asked a couple of shops about this and also sent a ticket in to Avidyne support.  So far, .... crickets...  BTW my 540 wouldn't update in the aircraft so the unit had to be exchanged,  and thus the setting that worked before, are gone.  Raw nav still works fine,  if not so precise.  My HSI is a  KCS 55.

TIA
